Have a few facts ready. Note which drains are slow, whether you smell sewage, and when you last had the tank pumped. If you know where the tank lid is, say so. Photos help.
What to Ask a Provider
A first-time caller does not need technical knowledge. These questions cover the basics:

- What is the likely cause, and how will you confirm it?
- How soon can you come out?
- Do you hold the license your area requires?
- What happens if you find something unexpected?
- Will you help me document the damage for an insurance claim?

Terms Worth Knowing
The drainfield is the soil area that absorbs water leaving the tank. A baffle is a part inside the tank that keeps solids from escaping. Providers should explain any term they use.
